About This Coffee

This is an FW Grade Organic White Nile Coffee from the Nebbi and Zombo harvest areas in northwest Uganda. Growing altitude for this lot ranges from 1,450 to 1800 masl and varieties include 70% SL14 and 30% Catimor. After harvest, cherries are floated before pulping to ensure separation of unripe cherries. Coffees are then washed and sun-dried in parchment for 1 hour on patios before moving to raised beds for an additional 2 weeks of drying. Finally, the coffee undergoes 36-48 hours of rotational drying to reach appropriate moisture levels for export. The White Nile mills also feature use of volcanic stone waste water treatments to clean and recycle their waste water.

Since independence in 1962, Uganda has started to attain its vast potential. A landlocked country in East Africa, Uganda consists of a Savannah plateau covered by mountains and lakes – including part of Lake Victoria from which the Nile flows north-wards to Sudan. The White Nile mills are named for the nearby Murchison Falls, where the Nile passes through a narrow passage of volcanic rock and emerges as a foamy white waterfall pouring into Lake Albert. The climate is mostly warm and humid. The majority of people live in the southern half of the country. Uganda has substantial natural resources, including fertile soils, regular rainfall, and sizable mineral deposits of copper and cobalt. Agriculture is the most important sector of the economy, employing over 80% of the work force. Coffee accounts for the bulk of export revenues, followed by cotton and tea.
