About This Coffee
This is a grade AAA washed Arabica coffee originating from Malawi's Mzuzu Cooperative.
The origin of this organization was the smallholder projects funded and managed by the Commonwealth Development Corporation in the 1980’s and centered from the Mzuzu City head office and Coffee Mill. This organization was rebranded under the name of the Mzuzu Coffee Planters Cooperative Union Limited in 2007.
Producers with Mzuzu Coffee Planters Cooperative Union Limited are located in the northern districts of Malawi from Mzimba upwards.
The harvest season of these cooperatives is from June to September.
All the coffees are processed by the fully washed method and following sun drying, are stored in bags in a cool well ventilated environment for at least two weeks and often over twelve weeks, before being sent to the Mzuzu Coffee Planters Cooperative Union dry mill, for processing.
There are approximately 2,700 small scale farmers working within these cooperative districts and of which, over 30% are female. The coffees grown are a mixture of Catimor 129, Nyika Catimor and a small percentage of Geisha inherited from the early days of the cooperative movement. These coffees are all blended within the mill and not retained in terms of varietals.
