About This Coffee
This is a coffee from Gatomboya factory, located in Karindudu. The nearest town is Barichu. The region received approximately 1500mm rainfall annually, and the farm sits at 1770 masl in volcanic soils. The temperatures are mainly between 14 and 25 celcius. A total of 698 farmers contribute to Gatomboya facotry, 214 of those being female, and 484 of those being male. The factory was built in 1987 under Mathira Farmers Cooperative Sociey and in 1996, it broke away and joined Barichu Farmers Cooperative Society.
Other crops grown include tea, maize bananas, and other fruits and vegetables, with shade trees of Gravellea, Macadamia and Eucalyptus, creating a diverse, healthy environment for the coffee to grow. Varietals grown include SL28 and SL34. The water source is the nearby Kirigu river.
Producers with Gatomboya receive training with the factory manager every 2 years and undergo field days by the ministry of agriculture. Gatomboya factory offer its members access to credit for school fees, farm inputs and emergencies. Its goal is to share information with farmers regarding crop husbandry and other agricultural practices important to coffee.
Gatomboya is a Kikuyu word meaning “swamp” due to the swampy area,which made it a good arrow roots cultivated area.
