About This Coffee

This specially prepared grade 1 fully washed microlot comes from the village of Cijapati Garut in the Sunda Garut region of the island of Java. This lot is made up of coffee from 21 smallholders in the area around Cijapati Garut. These small producers typically cultivate an average of 1.5ha of land at an altitude of around 1,200masl, and grow the varieties of Catimor, Tim-Tim and Typica. A-typically for Indonesia, this coffee utilizes a fully washed process. The east side of the Regency of Bandung is bordered by Regency of Garut, a conservation area called G. Mandalawangi. Sixteen centuries ago, this mountain was also the sacred location of a hermitage of the Galuh-Sunda kingdom.

History of Coffee in Java

Although coffee was first planted successfully on Java around 1700, cultivation spread slowly throughout what would become the great archipelagic state of Indonesia. In fact, the green coffee of Java served as progenitor to the coffees of far off Central America and had begun its ascent to being considered, alongside Arabian Mocha, as one of the best coffees in the world, long before commercial cultivation spread to nearby islands. At the same time, it should be noted that nearly all coffee from any island in the Dutch East Indies was considered “Java” until the early 20th century, so whose to say what Java was before then.
