The Producer
Coffee production in the region started in the 1920’s. This latest decade the farmers of Acatenango are dedicated to improving their cup, achieving worldwide recognition.
El Platanal is one of the oldest and recognized farms in the Acatenango valley, has been conserved by the family and inherited from generation to generation. Every generation improve their process gaining better and more consistent cup with knowledge of the soils and the ground.
Nowadays, El Platanal has success with Bourbon, Caturra, Catuaí and Pache varieties.
The Art of Production
Every cup of coffee has a dedication and a story behind them, at the farm they attend every part of the process. Since the pick of the cherries, selecting only the mature and best ones, to carefully depulping it after. The fermentation process is made in tanks the right time to get a delicious flavor, then washed until is ready to get dry. The drying is made first at the patios, and then finishing at the guardiolas.
They perfected the process to gain a high-quality coffee with brillian acidity, striking sweetness, and a round body.
About The Region
Acatenango is a municipality in the Chimaltenango department. In the region there are numerous hills and mountains to the west and north that form the Acatenango valley. This region is known to produce some of the finest coffees in Guatemala and earned its own denomination of origin. Acatenango (called Acate for short) famous for its high-quality coffee, the climate, black volcanic soil, the altitude, and dry harvest season help to achieve unique flavors and body.
Besides coffee, farmers also grow vegetables, corn, beans, and potatoes, making agriculture the main economic activity there.
Is also known because the Acatanango’s volcano cataloged like stratovolcano which is a conical volcano built up with multiple layers of hardened lava and tephra, Acatenango is second highest volcano in the country reaches 3,976 MASL. It is a grueling hike, but it can be done with some the right gear and fitness.
